Households and businesses in the United Kingdom may experience hard water problems. The majority of the population in the United Kingdom (60%) lives in an area with hard water. Among the most severe consequences of hard water are limescale and corrosion. It is important to note that an average household of four people generates up to 70 kg of limescale yearly. Trying to control that amount of limescale is no easy task.

With more than 15 years of experience and a good understanding of the harm from limescale and corrosion, Polyteck has formed a joint venture with STOPCOR to bring its innovative water conditioner solution to the UK market.

Limescale and Corrosion are two factors that cause harm to the environment

The UK economy is estimated to lose millions of pounds per year due to limescale deposits (calcium carbonate deposits), as scaled surfaces have less thermal conductivity and thus require more energy to heat. According to research, just 1.5mm of scale will result in a 12.5% increase in energy costs, while 25mm of scale can result in a 95% reduction in heat transfer. The impact is 1 billion GBP of energy loss in the UK alone.

The UK is estimated to incur an annual loss of approximately £80 billion due to corrosion and wear. In addition, many of these costs are entirely avoidable, which is even more alarming.

As a result of STOPCOR softeners and conditioners, which comply with UK government standards for Building Regulations, maintenance and testing are simplified, as annual tests can be carried out with tap water, which can be tested with a voltmeter.

Corrosion & Limescale control for Plumbing & Heating

The STOPCOR Water Conditioner and Corrosion Control System works using the cathodic protection corrosion control method of imposing direct current on metals and can be applied externally to generate a direct current of -1.5V through a sacrificial magnesium anode, which produces an electrical current without needing an electric power source.

Water’s carbonic acid removes scale deposits formed by natural crystallization. With STOPCOR, limescale and carbonic acid are balanced and pulled faster than they build up.

Thus, limescale accumulation is reduced, and piping networks and plumbing equipment are protected.

Further, STOPCOR does not remove minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. There is no change in the natural composition of the water. As a result of changing the surface tension of water, all plumbing parts, such as taps and shower heads, are scale-free, and the skin feels remarkably softer while taking a shower.

Final thoughts

Water softeners are used in various industrial and commercial environments where organisations need to preserve and protect their plants from scale and corrosion in hard water areas.

Water softeners and water conditioners offer several advantages.

As a result of softened water, repairs, replacements, and maintenance of equipment and appliances can be reduced.

The efficiency of hot water and heating systems is improved with softened water. Just 1.6mm (1/16″) of scale in heating systems can cause a 12% loss.

Your consumption contributes to the environment with the use of softened water.
