Boiler Installation Project Overview
Emanuel School, located in Battersea Rise, London, initiated a major boiler refurbishment project, which is located in the basement. The school management selected Polyteck as the contractor for the task after a rigorous tender process. The purpose of the school boiler replacement was to modernise and improve the efficiency of the school’s heating and hot water systems. The project took less than 3 months, from preparing documentation to testing and issuing the fully operational system to the client. It has been managed by Venizelos Venizelou, the Director of Plumbing and Drainage at Polyteck.
Scope of Work
Preliminaries
The project commenced with detailed planning and preparation. This involved the development of complex construction drawings, obtaining necessary approvals from building control and establishing complete operation and maintenance procedures. Additionally, we removed temporary heating systems and inspected equipment such as gas solenoids and expansion vessels. This detailed planning laid the groundwork for a successful boiler upgrade, ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s operations and instilling confidence in the project’s thoroughness.

Stripping-Out Works
Four new boilers have been installed, necessitating the thorough removal of existing systems. The dismantling and removal process involved disconnecting gas and electrical supplies, dismantling old boilers, hot water tanks, and flue components, and removing the control panel and associated pipework. The area was thoroughly cleaned to prepare for the new HVAC equipment. We ensured a more reliable and efficient infrastructure by eliminating potential safety hazards and inefficiencies by removing outdated boilers and providing security and efficiency.
Installation
Polyteck’s engineers carried out a thorough boiler plantroom upgrade at Emanuel School. They installed new boilers, heat exchangers, and pumps to improve building heating. New hot water tanks, control panels, and safety features were added. The ventilation system was upgraded, and all pipes were replaced or repaired where necessary. They improved the water supply and waste systems, ensuring safety with fire alarms and leak detectors. The electrical system was updated, including new lighting. Insulation was added to pipes and equipment, and thorough testing was conducted to ensure everything worked properly.

Miscellaneous Works
Additional works included Builders’ Work in Connection (BWIC) and fire stopping around service penetrations. Miscellaneous items deemed necessary for completing the works, such as rubbish skips, were also provided.
Challenges and Solutions
Throughout the installation of four gas boilers, several challenges arose, particularly with the gas supply valve, which required attention from the installation company due to a reported leakage. Solutions included diligent coordination and communication with the installation company to promptly address and rectify the issue, ensuring minimal disruption to the overall timeline.
Emanuel School Boiler Replacement
The boiler refurbishment of Emanuel School’s basement boiler plant room has culminated in a modernised heating system prioritising efficiency and safety. Rigorous commissioning, including visual inspection of gas pipework, pressure checks, cleaning, combustion analysis, safety control verification, and certificate completion on all four gas boilers, ensures optimal performance and compliance. The project’s strong ROI, underpinned by enhanced energy efficiency, underscores its value. This successful undertaking exemplifies the significance of precise planning, effective management, and a steadfast commitment to health and safety.
