Last week, Polyteck hosted a valuable work experience program for Year 10 students from East Barnet School to immerse them in the dynamic construction industry. Theo Ioakim, Kyri Ioakim, and Leo Panayiotou gained practical insights at our Head Office and project sites. They observed firsthand the complexities of project planning, the quotation process, and infrastructure integration at one of our prime client sites, as well as at Charlotte Court, where Polyteck is currently completing the final phase of the construction project, which involves developing penthouses on the rooftop.
We support career development initiatives to nurture young talent and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world industry practices. By providing direct exposure to construction operations and mentorship from seasoned professionals, we aim to equip students with the essential skills for successful careers in the built environment.
Theo’s Journey
Theo started his week immersed in a high-end residential project managed by Polyteck. His training involved a mix of office-based tasks, site visits, and learning the ins and outs of project planning. Continuing his experience at Charlotte Court, he delved into construction processes and observed a collaborative meeting with BT Openreach. His internship at Edgware encompassed overcoming construction challenges and acquiring project management fundamentals. Theo concluded his work experience by observing crane operations and inventory management procedures.

Kyri’s Learning Curve
Kyri’s week mirrored Theo’s, commencing with office-based tasks and site visits at the same client site. At Charlotte Court, he explored construction phases and infrastructure installations. His time at Edgware included troubleshooting intruder alarm maintenance and comprehending construction methodologies. Kyri concluded his work experience by conducting inventory research, enhancing his understanding of logistical and financial operations.

Leo’s Administrative Insight
Leo concentrated on administrative duties at the Head Office, including filing for a water maintenance project with our water treatment team. His visit to Charlotte Court yielded practical insights into construction coordination for fibre optic installations. Observing crane operations at the client site highlighted logistical challenges. Leo’s week solidified his understanding of project documentation and coordination.
The Benefits of Work Experience for Students
Participating in work experience programs offers students a multitude of advantages. These valuable practices provide practical insights into their chosen industry, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application. Students gain a broad understanding of industry processes, from project inception to completion, and acquire in-demand practical skills sought by employers.
Through work experiences week, the students gain a real example of what the industry is like giving them a better perception of the profession. Another advantage is that they can foster the development of essential soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, which are crucial for career advancement. By gaining exposure to professional environments, students can clarify their career aspirations, build professional networks, and establish a solid foundation for future endeavours.
